WWI Cultural Trail: A Unique Map Book Combining History and Adventure

Martino Spreafico Creates a Design That Blends Contemporary Ultra-Trail Running with WWI Cultural Heritage

I grew up in northern Italy, in the middle of the Alps between Valtellina, Dolomites, and Switzerland. I have always been fascinated by mountains and the history they hold. When I hike and climb, I can't help but think about the hardships people faced in the past, especially during times of war. Their resilience and bravery inspire me every day.

The WWI Cultural Trail, designed by Martino Spreafico, is a remarkable map book that seamlessly combines the visuals of a contemporary ultra-trail run with the cultural heritage of World War I. Spreafico's art direction and graphic design pay homage to the symbols, fonts, and graphics of that era, while infusing them with a modern twist. The book serves as a guide to the trail, intertwining descriptions of the modern route with the stories and thoughts of the soldiers who fought in the mountains and glaciers during WWI. It is a modern outdoor guide with a rich cultural narrative, and its unique graphic design reflects this concept.

The creation of the WWI Cultural Trail involved the use of various design tools and technologies. Spreafico utilized Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop to develop an art direction that evokes the atmosphere of the war years. The map, which plays a central role in the book, was designed using QGis. The result is a visually stunning book that transports readers to a different time and place.

The WWI Cultural Trail book consists of 94 pages, measuring 18.5cm x 23.5cm. The final page features a fold-out map that measures 70cm x 70cm when opened. This map serves as a practical tool for hikers, allowing them to navigate the trail while also providing interesting historical details.

Readers will find a wealth of information in the WWI Cultural Trail book. Each stage of the trail is described in detail, accompanied by modern and colorful images of the area. Infographics provide essential information such as length, elevation, and estimated time for each stage. Interspersed throughout the book are black-and-white photographs, poems, and the author's reflections, creating a rich tapestry of history and emotion.

The main challenge in designing the WWI Cultural Trail book was to effectively convey to readers and hikers that the trail's territory, encompassing Val Camonica and the Adamello Massif, is not only a beautiful natural area but also a place rich in history. Spreafico successfully merged the concepts of outdoor activity and cultural exploration, creating a book that celebrates the mountainous landscape and the stories it holds.

The WWI Cultural Trail project took place over a span of four months, with extensive research and collaboration with cartographic experts from SeTe srl. The team's knowledge of the territory was crucial in accurately describing the trail's stages. The creative design process involved seeking inspiration, creating design mockups, and seamlessly integrating the map with the overall visual aesthetic of the book.

The WWI Cultural Trail book has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial standards. The book's integration of industry best practices, technical excellence, and emotional impact contributes to a better world.

The WWI Cultural Trail book, created by Martino Spreafico, is a testament to the power of design in capturing the essence of a place and its history. It invites readers and hikers to embark on a journey of adventure and discovery, where the past and present merge in a harmonious blend of art, design, and storytelling.
